Any ladies with chronic illness?

7 posts in this topic

I'm just curious if there are any others here with chronic illness, health problems on here. What is your illness? Problems with significant others understanding? If you are single, what problems do you have dating?

I have numerous things wrong. Fibro, sarcoidosis, hearing impaired,PSVT, mitral valve regurge, chronic pain syndrome, degenerative disc disease, asthma, mild copd, anxiety, depression.

I'm single and am on a few dating sites. Its questions I dread...What do u do for work?  Are you on painkillers? Can you have sex still?

I think its scary for others and sometimes deters them from giving me a chance. I just want to say screw them! Lol I live my life to the fullest possible. I still am a sexual being. I still do a lot of things I love. I am worthy of waiting for the right person who gets me and overlooks my health issues.

If you are having these or other issues going on related to your health and need to just vent, let's all  help each other.

I have an under active thyroid which I am being treated for with synthetic thyroxine but like the weed killer that I spray on the weeds in my garden, it doesn't work. At least it feels to me like it doesn't work but I expect I would be much worse if I didn't take them and according to my yearly blood tests my levels are now normal. It's just that I still have many hypothyroid symptoms, weight gain, exhaustion, frequent urination, constipation, painful feet, aching limbs, dark circles under eyes, bloated stomach, puffy face and fingers, dry skin. It alters your looks and robs you of your energy. I do still have libido but nothing like it used to be. Some would/could say that might just be age but apparently hypoT does affect libido. On a day to day basis this condition is hard to live with but there are good and bad days. I have to resist the temptation to run round catching up with stuff on good days cos if I do too much in one day I will suffer for it for several days after. All my symptoms are exacerbated when I am stressed and it is best to try and avoid too much stress cos it can have a very debilitating effect leaving me breathless and anxious and feeling quite disorientated.

All in all it ain't much fun but no sympathy from NHS who seem to think of it as a minor condition and treat by blood levels rather than symptoms. Not very well understood condition by friends and family either, still I guess if you gotta have something as you age there are worse things. I ain't lost my sense of humour yet so I get by.

I don't know maybe it's better to not tell people too early on, re: dating sites. I know that's essentially lying by omission but at least it gets you a foot in the door? It's not what I would do but in previous years of problems I didn't have sex and tended to end my relationships too.

I've had cerebral palsy since birth it worsened from an accident a decade ago. I largely recovered only to have reproductive issues and a lot of undetected problems which sent me into septic shock a few months back. Cos my body was shutting down my neuro pathways were the first to get fried. I don't know when it'll improve/how active and able I can expect to be long-term at this point.

As for sex, I can still do that. Recently, I had sex with a friend. It shouldn't of happened, there were too many emotions on both sides for different reasons. It's a shame I don't have lovers on tap these days, sex always makes me feel better. Maybe I'll get back to that, maybe I won't same goes for dating/relationships, honestly if I'm not looking at a bright future I'm ok with not having that. I'd rather not do it at all than have it be shitty. I managed to fit a decent amount of living into the good years but I'm not gonna lie, it's a motivating factor.  Forever could be a long time to go without... :P

@Hungry  Despite the adversity in your life, and some pretty major health issues, you still seem to have a good attitude. I I admire that - people who are strong in adversity.  We just never know what any one person is dealing with, which is all the more reason not to judge people.

Things were actually looking up til the end of last week really. Sometimes it really is two steps forward, five back. But the question is how much do I want to live? I'm willing to fight for that because I've never wanted a standard pre-packaged life. There's lots to do out there. But for that I need my health. Y'know everyone judges, it's not necessarily a bad thing, I'm just as guilty of it if not more so of judging people. Perhaps cos I know none of us are free from that, it's just with a lot of problems you can't see them.

Great comments! It really is all about attitude. Staying positive in the face of adversity whether it's an issue with physical or mental health, problems with dating or marriage or anything else.

That sucks! I've got neuropathy in 3 of my 4 limbs. Legs from 2 separate back surgeries and right arm from a car accident that messed up my neck and shoulder. I was on pain pills for a long time then fentynyl patches This was before the second back surgery and accident.. That crap is too hard on ones system in the long term. My doc and I came up with a plan to do an inversive 16 week program with specialists who teach you how to manage pain through a bunch of alternative therapies. Quigong, gentle yoga, excersise program, psychology, hypnosis, non opioid meds, aqua exercise in heated pool, meditation pt, ot,etc etc. They gave me tools every person should have. Bless you and hope u are having a good day.
