Civil Partnerships: fading away but far from gone

Since same-sex marriage came in across Wales, Scotland and England, you might have thought Civil Partnerships were history. Quite a lot of people are still civilly partnering rather than marrying: story here.

I read in the press earlier about that idiot Biggins. The reporting of it was awful. I'm confused and disappointed how everybody is shrugging it off.

I feel... deflated, I guess. More upset than I suspected. And a bit "Should i feel so upset about this?" too, as if I don't have a right to feel written off as a whatever. His comments are almost certainly directed at male Bi's, (because society doesn't really even consider female bi's as a thing at all really, does it?) but that kind of makes me even angrier. This gay man, just spouting off about a minority that is ridiculed, ignored, blamed and dismantled because, well, what exactly? Because he can? Because nobody is going to make a fuss? Because well, it's 2016 and it's a-okay to be gay, it's super duper okay to be hetero, but if you are Bi, well, you can do one, because nobody straight or gay will GET what it's like, so therefore you don't exist. And nobody, not OFCOM or mainstream media is going to bother making a fuss. Because let's face it, those Bi idiots are all going to flit from one side to another one day.

If they even exist. It's only a trend now anyway isn't it? FFS.

*hugs Vivian*  I think at one level it's mostly aimed at himself really - and distancing himself from his own past.

It's a pretty uninformed opinion I have perhaps, but when he starts from "they ruin women's lives" and was married for a few years before coming out, I can't help think that he maybe kidded himself and his wife that he was bisexual to try and fit in when society was worse on LGBT than it became later.

Once you are then disowning who you were and what you did, it's easy to get to those bisexuals, I'm not one of them, look what they do, with a big dash of cognitive dissonance to forget that the behaviour you're talking about is those-people-over-there when it's actually this-person-I-am.

Sigh... this is why we have stuff like BCN magazine and ShyBis. It's our own voices or our silence.

All I would say is this. Don't believe all straight and gay folk dismiss bifolk. They don't and you fall into the trap of treating all them as you believe they all treat you. Bifolk have lots of allies and are getting more. If more werd actually out and open I am sure so many people would accept bifolk as fact and not fiction. Some of the solutiin is jn bifolks own hands :)

Entirely with you there lilac_lover -- part of the transformation on L&G rights, representation and acceptance has been the sheer numbers and visibility. They've done far better at that than bi people in the last 25 years or so!

We do have the added challenge though that partners will pressure us not to be "out" - "you were bisexual, now you're with me", "why are you talking about that, aren't I enough", etc, and sometimes more than just verbal challenges as well. If two homo- or hetero- people are in a relationship there can be lots of problems but that fact that the other one is also gay or also straight tends not to be one. See this among people visiting bi stalls at LGBT Prides so often - one wanders over, their partner looks vexed and pulls them away.

LGB people more likely to be 'revenge porn' targets

Distressing story this one, but perhaps also cautionary.

For us in the UK there have been laws in place the last 2 years which they don't have in the USA - can't stop it happening but can at least offer you some kind of legal recourse.

More under-25s say they are LGBT in the USA - will it carry on through into later life? Here.

Historic offences pardoned

Thousands of posthumous pardons for men prosecuted under homophobic laws in the UK - and is Ireland to follow suit?

Bi/Gay Swiss Blood OK

Switzerland is following the UK, USA and others in ending their life-long ban on bi and gay men donating blood. It's moving to a 12-month bar, which seems to be the new international norm.
