I guess I wanted to ask the Moderator team if there's any chance that new registrations are halted for a while. Maybe it's not possible, but I wonder about what else can members do to help other than reporting spammers.

I'll take this chance to thank you as well for all your hard work in making this place safe for its members :)

It looks like some sort of collective campaign at the moment to post bollocks and get to 5o posts. I've been wondering if they can then invade our PM messages.
I am who I am, your approval is not needed.

I was wondering the same, considering you need 50 posts for some actions - but no one has posted in this regard so I'm unsure if that was their goal. So far I can't use the PM system myself, so I wouldn't know.

OK, here goes...

All fora are under attack from spammers 24-hours a day.

Why? Because it is a business. It really is that simple and spammers are paid to spam.

What do they achieve by spamming? They are trying to post as many links (known as back-links) as they can on as many fora as possible - links to the sites who pay them to post spam. Some people will be stupid enough to click on these links. The consequences of doing so may be minor - ending up on a site selling fake Viagra, or disastrous - virus/worm infection of your PC. Plus, spammers sell their services on the basis that the more back-links there are to your site, the higher your search-engine ranking. The search-engines are however much wiser to this practice than they were a few years ago.

How do they do it? Most often by using software specifically designed to spam fora. The most well known program is called XRumer. IIRC, it was originally written by some POS in Russia. If the forum sign-up questions are too simple (What colour is the sky? How many wheels on a tricycle?), the program is able to sign-up on its own. If the questions are harder, sweatshops of people are used to sign-up and the accounts are then passed to the program. Once accounts are live, the program then makes as many posts as it can until banned. Sometimes it will also send spam PMs to members.

What can be done about forum spam? Quite a lot. Simply changing the sign-up questions to something subject specific and a little harder to answer will instantly stop 99% of spammers. There are also other tools and methods available.

Uncontrolled spam can and has killed many a forum and Shybi is currently in danger of being another victim. Existing members get sick of it and new members are put off by it.

Without the help of the Administrator, Moderators fight a losing battle with the spammers (and yes I'm aware of the current Admin situation)... and eventually the Mods will get pissed-off too.

How do I know all this crap? I have Moderated and Administered fora for about twenty years. ;)

On a Dutch website for women,  where I worked before we did cam checks with all new members. They could sign up, but were not able to do anything if the didn't do Skype cam check, with a piece of paper, in front of a clock holding straight up. On it the place,  the time and a security question.
But it was lot of work -  and fun.
Just want to share my experience.

I was meaning to say this, Golightly beat me to it. But yeah definitely true that any potential new member will be put off and before long existing ones if this nonsense doesnt stop. At the end of the day, we are part of shybi community and interested in matters related to our sexuality and to make friends with similar thinking folks. So we dont need all this shitty spam. Thats not what we're here for.

There is obviously some issue with the site's owner or administrator. I dont know the history, but like anywhere, if you have a problem, you go to the top because usually its only the top person who can take action.

I just wonder if a new member from now can only register through their facebook or twitter account which could be verified.

1008 thanks for your reports, I have banned the spammers. It helps us and you too, if you click repor on the spammer's profile rather than each post. We get less reports to sift through that way. It's only a quick click for us to delete all posts. It is really frustrating that we're going through another bout of spammers. There's nothing that we mods can do that we aren't all ready doing. Sadly our admin has been MIA for a long time now and she's the only one that can make any changes to the boards.

Excuse me if you anyone thinks I'm out of turn here. But I assume as the mods you have ways to contact admin? Even if she just confirms she's not gonna do anything about it at this point. I can't believe that nobody is asking her for some kind of thought on the matter. It's not your fault as mods and as ever, every member is grateful for access to the site without charge, I'm sure.

That said, eventually if this becomes a consistent issue at this level it's rendering the site ineffective and as much as it's a great resource there comes a point where it's so worn down that it fails to serve it's purpose. I mean if that happens, it happens but it seems like admin should know or change what she's paying for?

Non of us has her new phone number, only her old one. We literally can't contact her. She's not replying to PM's either.

I feel sorry for you as mods!

Kudos to all of you for sticking around and thanks for doing what you can.  I was a mod on a site for quite a few years and if the admin behaved like that I probably wouldn't of stuck around long-term. My guess, she probably knows how it's running somewhat. She has her own reasons for going MIA I'm sure, doesn't solve it though.

That's even more depressing than I thought, cos someone with the time and support could do up the site really easily. She's a fool for wasting her money - even though we are grateful for it's existence.

The whole situation does not bode well for the future: Sites fail, servers fail, hosts fail. Without someone to handle those events... and sooner or later, Shybi will be gone for good.

I mostly worry about her reason for not returning. I hope something bad hasn't happened.

Okay. Sorry, I was on mobile at the time and couldn't see the report button on the profiles. Will do this in future!

Last I heard she was still with her partner. Friend of a friend, but she doesn't even live in London anymore and I don't have a number otherwise I'd text and be like hey, is she alive? I don't think we need to dramatic conclusions of that sort! I think it more likely someone would of reached out if she had died actually, that's usually the way it goes...

She said something in the shoutbox today, so she's apparently not dead and is aware of the situation. Which seems to have improved drastically.

At least nobody needs to worry about her now if it's true :)

For the most part the spamming can only be stopped permanently with upgrades to the site which only admin can do. As for the rest of it we'll just have to see. Can someone confirm the shout box update for me? I couldn't see it.
